Know the Warning Signs
Symptoms That Mean You Need Reefer Unit Repair
Temperature climbing above setpoint
The most critical symptom. If the box temperature is rising toward the alarm threshold and the unit is running, the refrigeration system has lost capacity. Causes include low refrigerant, a failing compressor, dirty coils, or a restricted metering device. In Florida's 95-degree ambient heat, a marginal system fails faster.
Unit won't start
The reefer engine cranks but doesn't fire, or doesn't crank at all. Fuel problems (clogged filter, air in the lines, empty tank), battery issues, glow plug failure, or a seized compressor can all prevent starting. Every minute the unit is down, your cargo temperature rises — especially in a South Florida parking lot in summer.
Short cycling
The unit starts, runs briefly, then shuts down and restarts. This indicates a refrigerant pressure issue (high head pressure from dirty condenser, low suction pressure from low charge), an electrical control problem, or a safety switch tripping and resetting.
Unusual noise
Compressor knocking, bearing squeal, loose belts slapping, or vibration from worn mounts all signal mechanical problems that will get worse. A compressor making metallic noises is close to failure.
Frost or ice buildup on evaporator
A solid block of ice on the evaporator coil means the defrost cycle isn't working. Without proper defrost, airflow is blocked and the unit can't maintain temperature. Causes include a failed defrost heater, a thermostat that doesn't initiate defrost, or a damper that doesn't redirect hot gas.
Alarm codes on the controller
Carrier and Thermo King controllers log specific alarm codes that identify the failing component. Alarms for high discharge pressure, low suction pressure, high engine temperature, low fuel, and sensor failures all require diagnosis.
Root Cause Analysis
Common Causes of Reefer Unit Failure
Diesel engines are built for a million miles — but these conditions accelerate wear and cause premature failure.
Refrigerant leaks
Vibration, thermal cycling, and corrosion create leaks at brazed joints, flare connections, and compressor shaft seals. Florida's salt air accelerates corrosion on evaporator and condenser coils. Low refrigerant reduces cooling capacity and eventually damages the compressor.
Dirty condenser coils
The condenser rejects heat to the outside air. When it's clogged with dirt, pollen, cotton from loads, and debris (all abundant in Florida), it can't reject heat efficiently. Head pressure rises, the compressor works harder, and efficiency drops. In West Palm Beach's heat, a dirty condenser is the difference between holding temperature and not.
Fuel system contamination
Reefer diesel engines use the same fuel tanks that suffer from Florida's water condensation and microbial growth issues. Clogged fuel filters and water in fuel cause hard starting and stalling — right when you need the unit most.
Belt wear and tensioner failure
The serpentine belt drives the compressor, alternator, and water pump. A worn belt slips, reducing compressor speed and cooling capacity. A failed tensioner allows belt flapping and premature wear. Florida's heat hardens and cracks belts faster.
Electrical connection corrosion
Reefer units are mounted on the front of the trailer, exposed to full road spray and weather. Florida's humidity and salt air corrode every electrical connection, from the controller plugs to the engine sensors.
Engine wear
The reefer diesel engine accumulates hours fast — especially in Florida where it runs nearly continuously. Engine wear reduces power output, which reduces compressor capacity, which reduces cooling ability.
How We Work
Our Diagnostic Process
We don't guess at parts — we diagnose the root cause before turning a single wrench.
Alarm code retrieval
We connect to the Carrier or Thermo King controller and pull all active and logged alarm codes. The alarm history tells us not just what's wrong now, but what's been developing over time.
System pressure analysis
We connect refrigerant gauges and read high-side (head) and low-side (suction) pressures. These pressures, compared to ambient temperature and box temperature, tell us the condition of the compressor, metering device, condenser, and evaporator.
Engine diagnostics
We check engine RPM, fuel pressure, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. A reefer engine that can't maintain rated RPM under compressor load won't pull temperature.
Electrical system testing
Battery voltage, alternator output, starter current draw, and sensor readings. We check for corroded connections that cause intermittent faults.
Airflow verification
We inspect condenser and evaporator coils for blockage, verify fan operation and rotation, check damper positions, and confirm proper defrost operation.
Our Standards
Our Repair Approach
Leak repair and recharge
We locate refrigerant leaks using electronic detectors and UV dye, make the repair, evacuate moisture from the system, and recharge to the correct weight. We don't just add refrigerant to a leaking system — that's a temporary fix that damages the compressor.
Condenser and evaporator cleaning
We clean coils on-site using appropriate methods for the condition. Light debris gets blown out with compressed air; heavy buildup requires chemical coil cleaner. Clean coils restore capacity immediately.
Engine service
Fuel filter replacement, fuel system bleeding, glow plug replacement, belt and tensioner replacement, and other engine services that restore reliable starting and operation.
Component replacement
Compressor, condenser fan motors, expansion valves, solenoid valves, sensors, and controllers — we source and install Carrier and Thermo King parts for both current and older model reefer units.
Pre-trip preparation
Before a long haul, we perform a complete reefer inspection and pre-cool verification to ensure the unit will hold temperature for the entire trip.
☀️ South Florida Conditions
Florida-Specific Considerations
Running a diesel engine in South Florida is different from running one anywhere else. Year-round heat, humidity, and salt air create unique challenges our technicians are specifically trained for.
Maximum heat rejection demand
When ambient air is 95 degrees and pavement radiates 140+ degrees, the condenser has to reject heat into already-hot air. This is the worst-case scenario for cooling system capacity. A reefer unit that holds -10F setpoint easily in winter may struggle to maintain 35F in a West Palm Beach summer.
Continuous operation
Unlike northern climates where the reefer gets breaks during cool weather, Florida reefer units run at or near maximum capacity year-round. This accelerates wear on the compressor, engine, and all mechanical components.
Produce and perishable cargo
Palm Beach County is a major distribution hub for produce, seafood, and perishable goods. A reefer failure in transit means cargo rejection at the receiver — losses measured in tens of thousands of dollars.
Salt air corrodes coils
Trucks running coastal routes see accelerated corrosion on aluminum condenser and evaporator coils. Coil degradation reduces heat transfer efficiency and eventually creates refrigerant leaks.
Fuel quality in reefer tanks
Reefer fuel tanks are small and may not turn over fuel as quickly as the main tractor tank. In Florida's heat, fuel sitting in a small reefer tank is particularly susceptible to water condensation and microbial contamination.
